미국 생활기 2 - 못말리는 미국

인터넷에 떠도는 'Only in America'(못말리는 미국) 농담같은 현실을 소개하고자 한다.

1. Only in America......can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance. 앰블런스보다 피자 딜리버리가 더 빨리 도착하는 나라.

2. Only in America......are there handicap parking places in front of a skating rink. 아이스 스케이트 링크장앞에 장애자 파킹장이 있는나라.

3. Only in America......do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front. 아픈사람들은 약을 사러 마켓 맨 뒤구석으로 가게 만들면서 건강한 사람들은 입구 카운터 앞에서 담배를 살수 있는 나라.

4. Only in America......do people order double cheese burgers, large fries, and a diet coke. 더블 치즈버거에 라지 프렌치 프라이즈를 사면서 콜라는 다이어트를 사는 나라.

5. Only in America......do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters. 은행의 정문 후문 모두를 활짝 열어두면서도 싸구려 펜은 카운터에 묶어두는 나라.

6. Only in America......do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage. 값비싼 자동차는 집밖에 두면서도 쓰레기 잡동사니는 차고안에 두는 나라.

7. Only in America......do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place. 전화 자동응답기를 설치해 누가 거는지를 선별하면서도 콜 웨이팅 기능을 달아 전화중 누가 거는지도 모르고 전화를 받는 나라.

8. Only in America......do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. 10개들이 핫도그를 사면서 빵은 8개들이를 사는 나라.

9. Only in America.....do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'. "Politics"라는 단어를 애용하면서 진짝 이 단어가 내포하는 의미 'Poli"(다양한, 다수의) 와 "tics"(피빨아먹는 괴물)는 잘 모르는 나라.

10. Only in America......do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering. 드라이브 인 ATM(현금자동 인출기)에 점자를 해 놓는 나라.
